Martin's Trip to Intersolar, Munich

For the solar industry and its partners, Intersolar Europe is the world's leading exhibition held annually at the Messe Munchen exhibition centre in Munich, Germany.

The events exhibition and conference focus on areas such as:

Photovoltaics
Energy Storage
Renewable Heating Technologies
Products and solutions for smart renewable energy

Since being founded 25 years ago, Intersolar has become the most important industry platform for manufacturers, suppliers, distributors, service providers and partners of the solar industry. Therefore, it made sense that Martin should attend at least one day of the exhibition.

The timing of the exhibition could not have been better! On the day Martin set off for Munich, Britain opted to leave the European Union and the value of the pound plummeted! Unfortunately for Martin, this meant he had much less money to enjoy the famous German beer and pretzels which, of course, is obligatory to sample while there.

This aside, the time spent at Intersolar was very productive and Martin was astonished to see how much of the exhibition was taken up by battery storage. Germany has always lead the UK renewables industry in solar PV and as such they too have already made the transition to battery storage well in advance of us. The battery storage industry in Germany is colossal and the fact that Mercedes Benz offers its own domestic solutions demonstrates how the industry is booming.

Martin comments "More and more companies are starting to talk about battery storage and mentioning terms such as on grid, off grid and hybrid solutions. Battery storage can be complex, however, the industry needs to simplify the jargon to help understanding.

The current position of battery storage is very similar to where solar PV was 6-7 years ago and today most people are aware of the technology. Battery storage isn't for everyone just yet, but it can be seriously beneficial for those with limited grid connections or businesses that require a cost effective solution to upgrade their single phase connection to three phase."
